I have no problem with the Shapely package. My efforts will still be
focused on my GEOSGeometry module and it's role in GeoDjango. At this
point, I do not see making Shapely a requisite or licensing my code
under the LGPL, however, I'm definitely not opposed to sharing ideas
for improvement or bug fixes.

I think SWIG has its place if you're trying to support a large number
of external interfaces. For example, SWIG is a good fit for GDAL/OGR
because they want to support C#, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby. I
currently use the OGR ng-python bindings for my coordinate
transformations (thanks to hobu for fixing the 2.5 issues this
weekend).
I'm interested in what you guys are doing w/PyProj -- you might
consider a ctypes interface for that as well.
